Introduction
The Department of pathology came into existence in year 1964 headed by Prof. I.K. Somani .The classes for undergraduates students were held in Ayurvedic college building & laboratory facilities were started in D K Hospital. Subsequently in 30th September 1976 the department was shifted to the new college building.
The department undertakes laboratory investigations of the out door as well as indoor patients of Dr. B R Ambedkar Hospital, Raipur along with running a well equipped Model Blood Bank.
 

Facilities
The pathology department has various sections,fully equipped for laboratory investigations.

Histopathology - Biopsy as well as operated resected surgical specimens are received.Facility for Immunohistochemistry has been started in Nov 2008. Histopathology is also done for postmortem specimens received.

Cytology - FNAC done for indoor as well as outdoor patients,including USG & CT Guided FNAC.Cytospin also available for fluid cytology.

Clinical Pathology & Haematology – Routine Investigations of the patients including Bone marrow Examination is being done.Cytochemical stains are done for Leukemia typing.

Special Instruments Available Here Are – Coagulometer for complete coagulation profile, Automated haematology analyzer with 18 parameters,Urine Analyser,QBC for Malaria,Electrophoresis.On an average 550 nvestigations are carried out per day.

Blood Bank – Upgraded to State of the Art Model Blood Bank in year 2004 and completely equipped with all facilities for issue of whole Blood , Blood components like Packed red cells ,Platelets and FFP
- Voluntary Blood Donation camps are held from time to time .1st Oct. is observed as national
  Voluntary Blood Donation Day.14th June. is observed as World Blood donor day.
- Seminar for Rational use of Blood are held from time to time .
- Training is being given to Technicians and Medical officers coming from District hospital of
  the state.
 

Achievements & Research
1. Undertaken ICMR research on Antenatal detection of Haemoglobinopathies held from
    January to December-2004.
2. WHO-ICMR workshop on Haemoglobinopathies held.
3. Proposed ICMR research –Screenig for G6PD deficiency of Multicentric study.
