Introduction
Forensic Medicine and Toxicology is a subject taught to Medical Students in second profession of M.B.B.S. with Pathology, Pharmacology & Microbiology. The department conducts medico-legal postmortem examination. It is a referral centre for the entire state of Chhattisgarh which undertakes all such cases including Skeleton, mutilated dead bodies, small burnt pieces of bones etc. for arriving at conclusions to establish the identity of the deceased & to know the cause and nature of death. In collaboration with the department, Medico legal Institute under Home department has been established which is at its beginning stage.
 

Facilities
The department has all facilities required for teaching to M.B.B.S. students and for conduction of medico legal autopsies. The department is short of teachers hence postgraduate study courses could not be started.
 

Achievements & Research
The department conducts about 2000 autopsies and about 100 expert opinion cases per year. The department’s head at present is Professor Dr. R.K. SINGH who has been awarded a senior Scientist award in the National Academy Conference of Forensic Medicine in the year 2003. He has presented large number of research papers in National Conferences & some publication is also on his account. He was an Associate editor of Journal of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology and also a member of an international board of International Journal of Legal Medicine & Medical Toxicology.
 

Courses
M.B.B.S. Courses only. Postgraduate Courses could not be started due to short of required number of teachers in the subject.

Symposium & Seminar
The department gives training to Medical Officers, Police Officers of the State when demanded for.
